Here’s How I DIY a Vertical Clothes Pin Task as an Occupational Therapist when I’ve Got Limited Tools or Equipment

If you’re a PRN therapist bopping around to different buildings, a Home Health therapist who doesn’t want to tote around lots of equipment, or a fulltime Clinical therapist who’s gym just doesn’t have a lot to offer, this hack is for you!

Let’s set the scene…

You want to work on shoulder flexion, standing balance, upward gaze and posture, and fine motor control (or some combination).

What You’ll Need:

  • a gait belt
  • some clothes pins (bonus points if you’ve got ones of varying tightness)
  • a door that can close

What to Do:

  1. Keeping the gait belt unfastened, hang the buckle of the gait belt over the top edge of the door, leaving most of the slack on the side you’ll be standing on
  2. Shut the door
  3. Now hand your Client the clothes pin, having them clasp the pins down the length of the gait belt that is hanging from the door

Literally so simple, but super effective!
